Childproofing your home

When bringing a small child into your home, you understand that they don’t always mind their business or do what is safe for them. They do silly things, which get them in trouble. These things can also get them hurt as well, should they get the chance. This is not their fault, as they do not know any better. It is because of this that childproofing your home exists. This attempts to alleviate the chances that they will be put in dangers way, putting you and your family at peace of mind. We will be discussing the things that you can do so that your child is given a safe living environment.

Childproof Your Electrical Outlets

Electricity is dangerous when being used by someone who doesn’t know it’s capabilities, which means that this is very true for babies. It is also more dangerous for younger children, due to the fact that they have less body mass as adults do, which means it takes less for them to feel the effects. Outlets in your home will typically run off of 120 Volts, but did you know that all you need is 40 volts to be potentially fatal? This proves very dangerous even for adults, but the effects are amplified for children. They won’t know any better until it is too late. It is because of this you should childproof your electrical outlets by installing safety plugs, our outlet covers all the outlets you are not using. It is also noteworthy that all cords should be well managed, by using methods which stow the cord away, and keep it from posing a tripping, or choking risk. You should also take great concern to unplug any and all loose appliances put up whenever you are not using them. This includes appliances such as toasters, hair dryers, hair straighteners, or anything else you may use.

Use Fireplace Grates and Screens

Fireplaces are arguably one of the most comfortable features a home can have. It is, however, one of the most dangerous as well when being seen by a small child. If they don’t know that fire is hot, or get caught up playing, it can take only one mistake before they fall into it. It is for this reason that you should never leave them unattended or let them play near the fireplace while it is in use. You should consider installing a fireplace grill and keep it installed at all times whenever the fire is burning. The only time that the grill should come off is whenever you are cleaning the fireplace. It is also important to note that any tools you may use for the fireplace, such as lighters, or logs should be kept away from children at all times.

Preventing falls

Some homes have more than one story, which will warrant the usage of steps to reach the next story. So, if you have children you should employ the usage of baby gates in order to keep them from playing on the stairs. Baby gates should be put anywhere needed in order to keep your child out of somewhere potentially dangerous.

Store Chemicals In A Locked Cabinet

Chemicals can kill people! There is an elevated risk for this when speaking about your children. They do not know any better, so if they drink something they shouldn’t, they won’t know this until it is too late. This is why it is very important to put up any chemicals you have in your home. These should all be out of reach of children.

Shorten Your Window Blind Cords

You should not hesitate to shorten all window blinds so that the cords aren’t long enough so that your child can reach them. If they get this around their neck, or arm this will pose a huge danger to their immediate health.
